"And then you really start to experience what the industry really is. I've never been part of a competitive culture before, and all of a sudden that's all it seemed like it was. "'I always feel like I'm writing sort of retrospectively about things that have passed or come to fruition and that can be really disturbing. Like, you're digging back into something you've already overcome, and that can really thrust you back into a place of feeling I'm sad or emotional and I'm like, god, that's so strange. Because right now I feel very settled and normal and whatever, and I'm writing about how I was feeling six months ago. And so it can be strangely uncathartic. ... You're like, no, I've worked through this. Why am I upset again?'" (read full article).

Read Tegan and Sara's Coachella Blog at RollingStone.com.
“What makes it special is, we’re two people collaborating. That’s the heart of what we do,” said Sara, who makes her Aspen debut when Tegan and Sara perform, as a five-piece band, at Belly Up Aspen on Wednesday, April 30, with Australian duo An Horse opening. “It’s always been very easy, very intuitive, and it’s always worked. That’s the area where we work best." (read full article)
"So why do you hate Sara so much?

[Laughs] I don't really hate her, but sometimes I wish I did. Like, we could just have a sister breakup and get our own lives. A few months ago in Europe, we got into a fistfight for the first time in seven years. We have fights, but it's never about the things you'd think. It's never about sibling rivalry or "Your song is better than mine, so I'm going to punch you in the face." We saw some movie a few years ago about Siamese twins, and there's a scene where they're fighting and they're pushing each other, but they're completely stuck together and I turned to Sara and said, "That's how I feel about you." So even if that's how it is, we still have this career and life together and it can be really tense. But Sara and I can't fire each other, otherwise we wouldn't have a career. We've gone though enough tour managers and band members, so thank God we can't fire each other." (read full article)

"INDIO, Calif. (AP) — Tegan and Sara, the identical twin powerpop duo, are accustomed to writing intimate, emotional songs about heartbreak. But when performing, for every song like "Back in Your Head," there's a balance of silliness. Between nearly every song played by the singing-songwriting pair, the two casually — often hysterically — banter back and forth in what amounts to indie music's answer to Laurel and Hardy." Q&A with Tegan

"Yes. Sara and I have three sort of rules for shows. We don’t play for money — if we don’t like the venue we aren’t going to play there, no matter how much they offer. We try to do all-ages shows whenever we can. We never play a show unless it’s 16 and over. If we do 21-plus shows we are cutting out a huge portion of our demographic. The third thing, we try to keep our ticket prices really low. We always make sure we can sell our own merchandise. We aren’t out to make money; we are just out to have fun.

We have really good merch. The new run we are doing is so good. We always do a hoodie, a few shirts and this time we have a light windbreak." (read).

St. Louis - Tickets!

What's Almost as Good as Ponies and Jewels?

Anything involving the clever, witty and oh-so-charming Quin sisters promises to be nothing short of delightful, so what could be better than going to a Tegan and Sara show? Few things. Few things, indeed. But how about going to a Tegan and Sara show for FREE? A devoted fan who bought tickets recently learned that she could no longer use them, but would like to pass two GA tickets to the May 4 St. Louis show at The Pageant on to another pair of devoted fans. The first person to send an e-mail to libbie.grobmyer@gmail.com will be the lucky recipients of said tickets. There are several small stipulations that must be honored in order to receive the tickets though:

1.) You MUST agree to clap overhead between each and every song...even when your arms get tired.

2.) You MUST make a solid effort to capture footage to share on the Tegan and Sara Banter blog.

3.) You must NOT scream out for "My Number," "Days and Days," or any other song for that matter. Especially those that haven't been played live in the last five years. Set lists are called set lists for a reason. They're set.

4.) You MUST buy at LEAST one item at the merch table to make up for the fact that the tickets were free. And for God's sake, buy some An Horse merch as well. Merch is the lifeblood of touring bands, especially ones just getting started. Plus, An Horse is damn good.
If you feel that you can live up to these standards, know without a shadow of a doubt that you'll be able to attend and have the desire to flash your solidarity pump along with Sara, you shall indeed inherit the tickets. Better act fast though. Free stuff doesn't last long.

"In the forward to Kate Bornstein's bookHello Cruel World, Sara writes about the childhood games she used to play. So how did games like Jail or Orphanage actually go?

Sara:
That's very controversial! I think that there was a point in therapy about five years ago when I was talking about the games I played when I was a kid. My therapist really saw it as part of these divorced kid, isolated, depressed, lower middle class issues and I was like, "Listen! I may just like being confined in a small space!" Like I was born in a womb that was way too small for both me and Tegan and there's some sort of a desire to be back in some kind of tiny, uncomfortable space. I don't really know who really thought about those ideas first, and I feel kind of upset at the idea that Tegan and I were the ones that encouraged it. There are probably a load of adults that we grew up with in therapy right now going, 'And then there was Tegan and Sara and they made us play Jail and Orphanage and it was terrifying!'" European Tour (2008)

Tegan and Sara hit up Europe in early 2008.

They played in: Brighton, Leeds, Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff, London, Munich, Heidelberg, Hamburg, Cologne, Copenhagen, Malmö , Stockholm, Gothenburg, Berlin, Brussels, Paris, and Amsterdam. Whew.

The tour began with an arrival in the UK around ten or eleven o'clock in the morning. Tegan fell asleep around five o'clock. The result? Someone woke up sobbing hysterically after a bizarre dream. What an awesome start, eh?

They responded to the NME article. Which can pretty much be summed up as: "Suck my cock."

The Tegan and Sara crew and Northern State shared a bright yellow double decker bus. Unfortunately, the original bright yellow bus broke down and they had to get a replacement.

Tegan started sporting the pony tail. Sara noted, "Tegan looks like me two years ago."

Tegan shared the art of creating a set list.

Sara disappointed some ladies in the audience by announcing that marriage is not for her.

The "slutty" Irish tried to get them to take it off.

Tegan shared a random fun fact with the audience: she once had a phobia involving making phone calls.

Sara also shared a random fun fact about herself: she entered a pickle eating contest.

Sara threatened an assmonkey after s/he threw a bottle on the stage.

Tegan dedicated a song to all the boys she dated in high school.

Sara shared that Shaun has super powers.

Tegan asked the audience to maybe not scream like crazies during Soil Soil.

They talked about their Mom and Dad.

Sara chatted about her interactions with a certain French speaking waiter.

They sang Walking With A Geist in Hamburg.

Tegan read a poem in Malmo.

Sara got in touch with her inner hippie when she noted that the Swedish look good in a "spiritual sort of way."

Tegan talked about all of the other countries they want to go to.

In Stockholm, Sara talked about owning Nick Cage.

Colorful balloons found their way on the stage in Berlin.

Their guitar tech had a heart attack inside.

Tegan tried to tell a story about riding the bus but fighting audience members distracted her.

In Brusssels, Tegan thanked the whole touring entourage.

Sara had the band demonstrate how to be a good audience.

Johnny's family came out to see them play.

Tegan talked about the last time they were in Paris. And then...Sara had to get all mean mommy with misbehaving audience members.

They finished the tour in Amsterdam.

The Random:

They entertained us with Backstage Bilingual.

The Screaming Song Requesting Fans were still screaming like crazy monkeys:
  • Tegan responded in Brighton.
  • Tegan talked about the balancing of playing songs you love/hate.
  • In Nottingham, Tegan encouraged people to yell songs.
Items were thrown on stage: Undies, bottles, glow in the dark bracelets, drawings, etc.

Tegan showed off some new ink.

Bye.
